A Melbourne father recovering in hospital after a hit-run on New Year’s Eve has pleaded with the offender to come forward.

A Melbourne father recovering in hospital after a hit-run on New Year’s Eve has pleaded with the offender to come forward.

Mike Gill had stepped out to investigate illegal fireworks just after midnight, when a car turned from Murray Street onto High Street, Malvern, and accelerated.

“(I saw) car headlights from over my shoulder, and a hard revving engine,” he told from his bed at the Austin Hospital.

“Before I knew it I was just bowled over.”

Mike Gill spoke exclusively to about his hit-run. The Coburg local’s leg was broken in three places.

Mr Gill was left lying on the road in agony, with his leg broken in three places.

He said he has no idea who was behind the wheel of the offending car, but recalls a female passenger yelling “Happy New Year” from an open window as the car sped off.

“Driving off at a high speed, wishing someone a ‘Happy New Year’ upon impact is just horrendous,” the victim’s wife, Nerida Fearnley-Gill, said.

Police are now hunting CCTV footage from the streets where the car is believed to have travelled; they’re also probing a tip-off from a witness who said the offending car was black, with multiple people inside.

The incident unfolded in the suburb of Malvern. Mr Gill’s wife, Nerida, by his side in the Austin Hospital.

No arrests have been made, but Mr Gill hopes someone will come forward with information.

“I’d like (the offender) to be held accountable for their actions.”
