Men and women who were allegedly abused as children more than 30 years ago have begun giving evidence against a former Catholic priest accused of multiple child sex offences.

He is accused of sexually abusing six children.

Several complainants began giving evidence on Monday during a committal hearing that will determine whether Waters should stand trial.

The complainants' evidence is closed to the public, but the committal hearing is expected to last all week.

Waters has been charged with indecently assaulting one girl aged between 10 and 16 and “carnally knowing” the girl in the mid 1970s, according to court documents.

It's alleged Waters sexually abused the girl at Montrose and Croydon in Melbourne's east.

The 72-year-old has also been charged with committing an act of gross indecency in the presence of a child under his supervision at Smith's Beach on Phillip Island between 1986 and 1987.

Other charges include allegations of indecent assault at Camberwell, Ocean Grove, Smith's Beach, East Malvern and Warrenbayne during the 1980s.

Waters was originally charged with 35 offences in July, but prosecutors on Monday withdrew several charges.

He is on bail and will return to court on Tuesday.
