No machines. Congratulations, Orland Park voters. You said no to poker machines and yes to higher taxes due to the $500,000-plus that you just gave away to Orland Hills , Tinley Park , Mokena and Homer Glen . They send their sincere appreciation.

What planet — oops — town/city is the writer from urging people to vote no on any referendum for property tax increases that the Chicago Public Schools propose? CPS is run by the City of Chicago. Referendums do not exist in Chicago to raise tax rates for schools, libraries, fire and police departments. All these entities are administered by the city. CPS is not a school district in the same sense as those districts in the suburbs are, districts with boundaries that may cross town lines and take in unincorporated areas. I hope this clueless writer doesn’t live in Chicago.

I’m glad to see the Illinois prevailing wage law get some attention. I’ve been fighting it for over 20 years. At our landscape company, when we work at any publicly funded project, such as a school addition, we have to pay our laborers over $44 per hour plus benefits. They are often making more planting bushes than the highly educated teachers inside the school. Illinois is such a regressive, union controlled state.

Becoming a school teacher is hard work. We need their service. Before becoming a teacher in their state, they are aware of the salary and benefits but once they become teachers they start demanding more money and better benefits or they will strike. This brings me to this point: Why become a teacher if you know from the beginning that you would be unhappy with your salary and pay increases?
